Because most NYC properties don't have a driveway or private lot, street placement is the norm — and here's the part that catches people off guard: the permit has to be pulled by a licensed carting company or general contractor, not by the property owner or tenant. If your dumpster is going entirely on private property, a permit generally isn't needed. Most everyday project debris is fine: household junk, furniture, construction and demolition debris, wood, drywall, roofing material, yard waste, and clean concrete, brick, and dirt. What can't go in are hazardous materials — paint, solvents, motor oil, asbestos, chemicals, batteries, tires, and propane tanks are all prohibited by state and federal regulations.
